The PBY Consolidated Catalina flying boat was one of the most versatile aircraft of the Second World War, and was operated by virtually every Allied nation in anti-submarine, air-sea rescue, patrol and minelaying / bombing roles. Though its top speed was less than that of a modern car, it could carrry enormous weights and remain in the air for up to 32 hours.
